The Play of the Week
by Howard Pflanzer
The Play of the Week, a drama series on channel 13 in
New York during the '59 and '60 television seasons
presented a series of filmed stage productions of
plays by such writers as Anouilh, Sartre, Williams,
O'Neill, Giraudoux, Lorca, Ibsen, Graham Greene, and
Shaw. The unique feature of this series was that each
play was presented for an entire week at the same time
each evening. I saw Sartre's NO EXIT with Colleen
Dewhurst at least five times and was able to enjoy an
absorbing production of THE ICEMAN COMETH with Jason
Robards several times. This series inspired my
life-long professional interest in drama as a
playwright and teacher.

PlaysOnDVD Comment:
At least one production
from the same general period as the series
that Howard P described is available on DVD: Jason Robards in THE ICEMAN COMETH (1956):
Also some of the playwrights that Howard P mentioned are
covered in Paul Pierog's "Search For The Important Plays On DVD's" about Modern Plays.
